Why UNM is My Choice for Residency: I will be honest and say that UNM wasn’t even on my radar when looking for pediatric residencies. I knew I preferred cold weather and the thought of 3 years in “the desert” seemed less than ideal. I scheduled the interview with the preconceived idea that it would be terrible. What I walked into that day were residents who were kind and approachable, staff who beamed with pride in the program, and a program director who was invested in the program as if it was her child. After that day, my mind was totally changed. I took a chance and ranked UNM #1. A few months into residency, I experienced a personal loss that was very devastating. The way in which my fellow interns and the upper-levels/staff helped me through it all has made me realize that I definitely made the right choice. It only took a few weeks and I feel as though I am part of a big, pediatric family.
Favorite Things About UNM: The autonomy the attendings give us and the family-like feeling of the program
Favorite Things About New Mexico: I love the Balloon Fiesta and seeing the beautiful Sandia mountains everyday
