Why UNM is My Choice of Residency: The reasons why I chose UNM for residency are multifaceted. I was born and raised in Albuquerque and went away for medical school. Through my adventure of moving away and living in a big city on the east coast, I realized more and more the fondness I had and still have for my home city and state. Albuquerque is the smallest big city that I know. It has all one can ask for in opportunities for activities to do outside of the hospital and it has the small city feel of comradery and friendship. These characteristics have integrated their way into the UNM pediatric program, making it feel like a family and producing a fun and positive work environment. The program is set up for every resident to succeed in their own endeavors with the ability to personalize each one’s own curriculum within designated tracks during the second and third year of residency. Oh, and who can deny putting red and green chile on everything making for some of the best food!
Favorite Things About UNM: The camaraderie between residents and staff/attendings is strong. Everyone is friendly, which makes "going to work" fun and easier, even if it is a long day. Residents have been known to play pick up games of kickball and basketball, and have been known to even play teams of attendigs from time to time.
Favorite Things About New Mexico: I love that New Mexico has all four seasons. With this being said, you can participate in any outdoor activity that you could imagine - from skiing/boarding in the winter, golfing and hiking almost year round, and even wakeboarding on the lakes during the summer.
