There are four components to the Empowerment and CBPR course:
History of Curriculum
The development of this curriculum was an initiative from Nina Wallerstein of the Center for Participatory Research, University of New Mexico, with an initial workshop co-sponsored by the Health Promotion Unit of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in July 1999. Attending the workshop were health professionals from the Americas with the intention of co-creating an interactive curriculum in empowerment, participation, and health promotion, also in collaboration with Interamerican Consortium of Universities and Centers for Training in Health Education and Health Promotion (Consorcio Interamericano de Universidades y Centros de Formación de Personal en Educación para la Salud y Promoción de la Salud, CIUEPS).
In May of 2005, the University of Sao Paulo’s School of Public Health, with translation assistance from CEPEDOC (Center for the Study and Documentation of Healthy Municipalities), hosted the first five-day workshop to pilot-test the Empowerment and Health Promotion curriculum, facilitated by Nina Wallerstein, Marta Lucia Gutierrez (Javeriana University - Colombia) and Mario Gonzales Sobera (Uruguay). The pilot had 35 participants, half from Brazil and half from other Ibero-American countries, including: Peru, Mexico, Uruguay, Colombia, Bolivia, Paraguay, Chile, Argentina and Spain. The result of this collective work from numerous professionals from different countries and by the primary authors led to the 2nd edition of the curriculum (Wallerstein, Gutierrez, Sobera, 2008). Workshops and University courses, using all or part of the curriculum, have been held throughout the Americas, including Chile, Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, etc.
The third edition was co-authored by Nina Wallerstein, Laura Chanchien-Parajon, Rosilda Mendes and Carmen Santana for the Portuguese/Brazilian edition. This third edition has been transformed to incorporate new material from Wallerstein’s Engage for Equity CBPR study in the U.S. as the core grounding for social participation and empowerment.
The new 2024 edition of the third version of the curriculum in Portuguese, Pesquisa Participativa e Empoderamento; Teorias e Práticas de Participação Social, is now available from Hucitec publishers, Sao Paulo, Brazil.
