October 2012
The third Vision 2020 Symposium was held on September 24th, 2012 at the UNM HSC; it was a great success! Between 90 and 100 participants attended the opening session and the breakouts.
The Goals of the symposium were -
1 - Align Vision 2020 with the HSC Strategic Plan and the new UNM Health System
2 – Determine strategies that align existing HSC resources to measureable health outcomes
3 - Address institutional challenges to reaching Vision 2020
The first breakout sessions focused on three important topics; access to health care, behavioral health, and diabetes/obesity. The second session focused on identifying institutional opportunities and challenges to reaching Vision 2020 in these three areas.

There is a new resource intended for use by researchers working with Native American communities. This 20-page booklet was developed by a multi-ethnic group of researchers and community consultants, including individuals who are active members of their tribal communities.
We offer 11 principles to guide research collaborations with Native American communities. Each principle is accompanied by an illustrative vignette and questions to elicit discussion.
This booklet shares what Native and non-Native researchers have learned through their own experiences. It represents an effort to advance research towards more conscientious implementation that will contribute to the realization of healthy, thriving Native American communities.
If you, or any groups you work with, are interested in any presentations, trainings, or facilitated discussions to accompany the dissemination of this resource, please contact Doreen Bird (dbird2@salud.unm.edu) or Kee Straits (k.straits@aggiemail.usu.edu).

SHARE New Mexico is an easy-to-use and customizable statewide web site which consolidates public and private sector information about a wide range of issues that impact the quality of life of New Mexicans. Initiated by PNM and supported by leaders from United Way of Central New Mexico and the Bureau of Business and Economic Research at UNM, SHARE New Mexico was created by a broad cross-sector of leaders from foundations, service organizations, governmental agencies, business, and research institutions in New Mexico, to provide a platform for sharing information and data.
Click here to learn more about the project and who is working on it. SHARE New Mexico will officially launch on January 15, 2013. If you are interested in participating in a “soft launch” in November, and evaluating tools and information on the web site, please contact debi@sharenm.org.
