Responses to Unprofessional Behavior

The director of the Office of Professionalism investigates all reports of unprofessional behavior made by members of the UNM HSC community. Students, faculty and staff who have observed unprofessional behavior should feel free to contact the director. Attempts are made to respect preferences for anonymity and confidentiality in the reporting process.

An electronic reporting system is currently in development.

The School of Medicine Professional Improvement Committee was established to respond to reports of mistreatment of learners.. The director of the Office of Professionalism chairs the committee, whose members include the deans of Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, Clinical Affairs and Graduate Medical Education.

The committee receives reports from School of Medicine Phase II clerkship surveys. When students report instances of unprofessional behavior in faculty members and house staff, the committee is charged by the executive vice dean and the Council of Chairs to provide this information to the relevant department chair so that remedial action can be taken.

The development of professional improvement committees for the Colleges of Nursing and Pharmacy is currently under discussion.
