Critical Care Medicine

Critical care is a rapidly expanding specialty at the University of New Mexico. We are the only level 1 Trauma Center in the region and the only academic medical center in New Mexico.

Our Critical Care Medicine program has developed a legacy of developing outstanding critical care physicians. Fellows train alongside multidisciplinary critical care experts in all intensive care unit (ICU) environments, including UNM Hospital's:

  • 24-bed medical intensive care unit ICU
  • 18-bed trauma surgical ICU
  • 6 bed CTV ICU
  • 24-bed neurological ICU
  • 20-bed pediatric ICU
  • 24-bed neonatal ICU

Our faculty and provider team are internationally recognized for identifying and developing treatments for new and rare critical illnesses. Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome was identified at UNM—we continue to research the disease and innovative treatment strategies.

Train in other specialized areas of patient care, including:

  • Severe sepsis and septic shock
  • Respiratory failure
  • Severe asthma
  • Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)
  • Percutaneous tracheostomy
  • Critical care ultrasound
