REDCap Guidance
REDCap Use Guidelines & General Information
The following guidance regarding use of REDCap will be in effect during limited operations beginning 3/31/2020.
Description of UNM HSC REDCap Services
The intent of REDCap is to collect data responsibly and securely according to the appropriate regulations and review board, including: the Privacy Regulations and the Security Regulations under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act ("HIPAA") of 1996 and its implementing regulations and guidance, all as amended from time to time; the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act ("HITECH Act"), as incorporated in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, and its implementing regulations and guidance issued by the Secretary, all as amended from time to time; and to abide by all guidelines provided by the Institutional Review Board (IRB).
Requirements Prior to the Use of REDCap
If the project utilizing REDCap involves human subjects research per the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), it must have been submitted to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for review or exemption and obtain IRB APPROVAL before the project will be moved to production and data collection can commence. Additionally, the project owner will provide the CTSC with the approved protocol, approved protocol date, and IRB number.
REDCap Safeguards and Access Restrictions
- The collection of Protected Health Information (PHI; per the HIPAA Privacy Rule) requires that the REDCap project database be hosted by the CTSC Informatics behind the firewall of the Health Sciences Center, and that access from outside of the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center will require the use of a secure HSC Net ID.
- Users will not share their login credentials with other study personnel working on the project. Login credentials are obtainable for collaborators outside the University system.
All projects asked to be put in production during the limited operations time period will be reviewed more vigorously for project type listing.
To access REDCap login page click here and click on the REDCAP Login hyperlink (The old login page will still be active until 8:59am tomorrow morning).

General REDCap Information
REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) is a secure web platform for building and managing online databases and surveys. REDCap's streamlined process for rapidly creating and designing projects offers a vast array of tools that can be tailored to virtually any data collection strategy.
REDCap provides automated export procedures for seamless data downloads to Excel and common statistical packages (SPSS, SAS, Stata, R), as well as a built-in project calendar, a scheduling module, ad hoc reporting tools, and advanced features, such as branching logic, file uploading, and calculated fields.
Please note that any publication that results from a project utilizing REDCap should cite grant support (DHHS/NIH/NCRR #8UL1TR000041).
NOTICE: If you are collecting data for the purposes of human subjects research, review and approval of the project is required by your Institutional Review Board.
