Apply for Child Neurology Residency

Thank you for your interest in our Child Neurology Residency Training Program at UNM School of Medicine in Albuquerque. The residency is focused on a strong education and provides graduated responsibility to foster leadership skills. Our residency will prepare you for academic, inpatient/outpatient or research-oriented careers.

Complete Training in One Program

Starting in the year 2017-2018, we switched from separate preliminary and categorical programs into a single combined 5-year program (two preliminary years of pediatrics at UNM before beginning the three years of neurology training) with one application (AAMC/ERAS program number 1962185C0). We work closely with the Pediatrics Residency Program throughout the interview season.

Although we hope to expand to accepting two residents each year in the future, we currently accept one and two residents in alternate years. We just started our first class of two residents in 2020 and plan to match one resident in 2021. All of our current training slots are filled. We participate in ERAS and abide by all match rules and policies.

Application Information

Each application season, we accept applications until November 30, but our interview slots may be scheduled and filled before that time. For best consideration, please consider sending your application to us the first week that applications can be submitted. Matching is facilitated by NMRP. Register today. Application Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements to be considered for our program. We will not consider applicants who do not meet all of our requirements. You must:

• Have graduated from an accredited medical school within two years of application or is in a US postgraduate training program.
• Have an excellent, documented command of the English language.
• Have the appropriate physical and mental health to be responsible for patients in a rigorous training environment.
• Not have had significant academic difficulty during his/her undergraduate medical education or previous residency training; for example, failing or marginal grades in a significant portion of the curriculum or a failure to pass USMLE, Parts I and II.

Graduates of Foreign Medical Schools

International Medical Graduates should submit documentation through the ECFMG office. Contact the ECFMG directly for further information. In general, most international medical graduates we interview must have:

• A green card, J-1 Visa or documentation of U.S. Citizenship.
• Valid ECFMG certificate with Clinical Skills Assessment certification.
• Evidence of a minimum of four months of clinical experience in the United States, preferably in an academic medical center setting.
• Two or three letters of recommendation from academic physicians you have worked with in the U.S.
• Minimum USMLE scores of 210 on both Step I and Step II.
• Graduated no more than 2 years prior to the application.
