The mission of the UNM Signature Program in Child Health Research is to improve child health and well-being through research. We are an interdisciplinary group of basic scientists and clinicians who aim to promote and support collaborative investigations on important pediatric topics. We do this through regular informal gatherings, structured events, and our pilot grant program. Please contact us if you would like to join, or if you have questions about upcoming activities or grant cycles.
CHRPS members meet quarterly in person in the Domenici building on the UNM HSC campus to present and discuss their research pertaining to child health. Presentations may be in the form of posters or slide presentations, and we encourage students and residents to present. Our next meeting will be July 26 from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. Please check this site in late June for room number and sign-up information.
The CHRSP regularly holds structured events showcasing and supporting child health research, thereby increasing awareness of research resources and activities.
Upcoming Structured Events:
The CHRSP will recognize Injury Prevention Day with an in-person event in November. Please check this site in the Autumn for more information.
The CHRSP solicits annual applications from all HSC faculty members – senior as well as junior investigators – for collaborative pilot projects on child health. Research may be prospective or retrospective, and clinical/basic science/translational in nature, but projects must involve two or more HSC schools or departments. Successful applications propose exploratory hypotheses intended to generate original data that can be used for future projects. Funding periods begin on July 1 and last 12 months. Requests for new applications are issued in early March, and applications are due mid-May.
Current Grant Cycle:
Past CHRSP Grant Awardees:
FY 2023: Katie Kivlighan, PhD, PI and Emilie Sebesta, MD, Co-PI. “Maternal-infant thermoregulation and early lactation performance”
FY 2024: Ethan Hill, PI and Lexi O’Donnell, Co-PI (SOM Department of Orthopedic Surgery, and the College of Population Health, respectively) for “A bone strength analysis of a pediatric postmortem CT sample from New Mexico”
