The Health Sciences Student Council (HSSC) is the student government body for all programs on the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Campus. The HSSC works to promote and support student interests and concerns, serving as the official student voice in matters of campus governance, policy, and community development.
The HSSC is composed of an Executive Board and Council of Representatives drawn from each Health Sciences program. Together, these bodies are empowered to advocate for and implement change on behalf of the student body.
The HSSC formally represents Health Sciences students on a number of institutional university committees, including the ASUNM-HSSC Joint Committee, the GPSA RDSA Council, the Library Renovation Committee, and the Information Technology Committee.
The Council serves as a liaison between Health Sciences programs and the wider university community, promoting campus events such as blood drives, discounted dental hygiene clinics, BSGP Research Day, and HSC Wellness Lobo Carts. Additionally, the Council was key to procuring new facilities in Domenici and implementing enhanced badge-access security measures in the student lounge.
Beyond governance, the HSSC is committed to advocacy, outreach, and community engagement. In February of 2026, the Council represented the UNM Health Sciences Campus at UNM Day at the New Mexico State Capitol during the legislative session - the first time the HSSC has participated in this capacity. The Council regularly invites professionals to speak on legislation, health policy, and civic advocacy, equipping students with the knowledge and tools to engage actively in issues that affect their field and their education.
The HSSC maintains a visible presence across the university and broader academic community through participation in tabling events, such as Student Organization Day on North Campus and at the Health Professions Symposium, a statewide conference for students pursuing careers in the health professions. The Council also strengthens student wellness and community through assisting with the campus food pantry, pioneering a social media initiative dedicated to highlighting individual students and Health Sciences programs across campus, and organizing Coffee & Bagels events held twice each semester.
HSSC meetings are open to all students and are held on the first Monday of every month at 6:00 PM. Each meeting includes time for new business to be introduced, ensuring all students have the opportunity to raise concerns, proposals, or items for Council consideration regardless of whether they hold a representative position. Each monthly meeting also features invited guest speakers presenting on campus resources, emerging opportunities, and committees seeking student representation.
If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to any Executive Officer. A full listing of meetings and events is available on the Schedule page. The Council welcomes all Health Sciences students to attend monthly meetings as the most direct way to connect, engage, and make their voices heard.
