Yá'át'ééh (Hello) Toney Johnson Jr. is our Student Success Supervisor at CNAH and works with current and future Tribal, Native American UNM Health Sciences students as they pursue a health degree.
Toney is a Native, New Mexican from the Diné (Navajo) Nation and passionate to support and serve our Tribal scholars. His clans are Tódich'ii'nii (Bitter Water clan) born for Tsé ’ n ahabiłnii (Sleep Rock People clan), his maternal grandfather is Tábąąhá (Water's Edge clan ), and maternal grandfather is ' Áshįįhi (Salt People clan). He grew up in Albuquerque with family from Ganado, AZ & Tohlakai , NM and graduated from Tohatchi High School...Go Cougars ( Náshdóítsoh )!
His field experiences include health education, health promotion, epidemiology, infection prevention and control, healthcare, higher education, public health, tribal relations, behavioral health, mental health promotion, and holistic wellness. He is looking forward to supporting our students and collaborating with our CNAH partners, staff, and community stakeholders.
Toney joins us from the State of New Mexico Indian Affairs Department (IAD) with careers at UNM Hospitals (UNMH), Indian Health Services (IHS), and the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) Tribal College in Santa Fe .
In his free time, he enjoys traveling, reading, hiking, biking, running, and playing basketball. He also loves to spend time with family and elevating youth voices in our diverse, beautiful tribal communities. Ahéhee’ (Thank You).
Toney holds a Master of Arts degree with an educational background in Psychology, Nutrition, Health Education, and Exercise and Sports Sciences.
