UNM STEM-H Center for Outreach, Research & Education
If you're in middle school or high school, you have the opportunity to compete in a number of STEM-H academic challenges, one of which is our state's largest science event called the Central NM Science & Engineering Research Challenge.
The Regional Research Challenge also hosts:
- 4th & 5th Grade Research Expo
- A series of Professional Development Workshops for K-12 STEM-H educators
Other events open to New Mexico youth are:
- The Central NM Science Olympiad
- The Southwest Region Junior Science & Humanities Symposium.
Student project development workshops for middle and high school student researchers annually in the fall.
Work is ongoing to convert several of the STEM-H Center's workshops into online professional development courses to be offered free of charge to educators/students through the NM STEM-H Connection statewide collaborative website which the STEM-H Center manages.
The STEM-H Center is engaged in Policy & Advocacy Work focused on K-12 STEM-H education issues. The Center's director is on the board of the NM Partnership for Mathematics & Science Education as well as recently completing a four-year term as a member of the NM Public Education Department's Math & Science Advisory Council. She is also on the Mission Graduate STEM Council, the Central NM STEM-H Ecosystem Leadership Team, and the Statewide STEM Action Team.
The STEM-H Center also coordinates a small Lending Library/Resource Center containing small scientific/engineering equipment and curriculum resources that can be signed out free of charge on a short-term basis by teachers, students, parents, informal STEM education organizations/programs, community groups, etc.
The Center's staff are available to provide consultation to research faculty interested in developing meaningful, sustainable broader impacts plans around STEM-H education in the K-12 realm in their research grant applications.
Part of the Center's mission is to work strategically within and outside the University to affect positive, lasting change/improvement in the STEM-H education provided to K-12 students in New Mexico so they enter college/career with a solid foundation of STEM-H knowledge/skills which will allow them to be better informed, productive citizens whether in STEM-H related or other career fields.
