Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine

The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care medicine is dedicated to advancing a diverse and inclusive workforce that can lead clinical, educational, research, and service excellence and drive equitable care for our diverse patient populations. We work in conjunction with the HSC Office for Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion.

Program Goals

Develop an educational curriculum for the department promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion addressing:
- Cultural and linguistic competency
- Unconscious bias
- Intercultural communication
- Anti-racism training
- Historical trauma
- Safe zone training
- Anti-sexism training
Lead and participate in task forces to integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion best practices in the department, School of Medicine, and throughout the health system
Assist with recruitment of diverse talent
Serve as an advocate for all populations as the UNM HSC and SOM

The anesthesiology department is working on threading DEI-related content throughout our residency and fellowship programs. Themes of particular interest include:

• Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender health/Sexual and Gender Minority Health

• Health advocacy

• Language concordant care

Upcoming DEI Events

Region III Medical Education Conference

The University of New Mexico School of Medicine's Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is hosting the 2021 Region III Medical Education Conference (RMEC) from October 22-24, 2021.

The conference will bring together underrepresented physicians, researchers, medical students, undergraduates, and high school students from the states of Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, and New Mexico. The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine will be sponsoring a booth at the event, and are encouraging people to register to attend the event and/ or submit an abstract. DEI Alignment with National Organizations

UNM Anesthesiology is participating in the Latino Medical Student Association(LMSA) Mentorship Program to help support LMSA members in exploring anesthesiology medicine careers. If you are interested in becoming a mentor register here.
