Welcome from the Program Director

Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine.

The anesthesiology residency program has a rich history. Since 1988, we have produced a steady stream of graduates who practice across in private and academic environments. Our program graduates are fully prepared to enter a variety of careers including general anesthesiology practice, fellowship training in a subspecialty, and academic medicine.

The UNM Anesthesiology residency program is founded upon the principles of clinical excellence, compassion, professionalism and education, with a special focus on clinical service to our local community.

Our graduates come from a diverse background and demonstrate the knowledge and skills to excel in all areas of general anesthesiology including:

  • Cardiac
  • Critical care medicine
  • Neuro-anesthesia
  • Obstetrics
  • Pain management
  • Pediatrics
  • Perioperative management
  • Regional anesthesia
  • Trauma

Our graduates will demonstrate professionalism in their care and interactions with all patients, colleagues and other team members, and nurture an environment of diversity, integrity and transparency in their practice.

Our four-year anesthesiology training program takes place at the state’s only Level I Trauma Center, a 580-bed facility, as well as at our affiliated VA center. In addition, UNM residents train at our Ambulatory Surgery Center (OSIS) as well as at our regional hospital (SRMC) and Children’s Hospital (BBRP).

The department also runs a basic science laboratory designed to encourage and nurture residents interested in combining basic science and clinical research. In addition, we run an ASA-accredited simulation center that trains residents in real-world crisis management skills. Currently, the program offers eight house staff positions per clinical anesthesia year, with a transitional year (six positions) that serves as our clinical base year.

UNM sits in Albuquerque, the largest city in New Mexico, with a population of over 900,000 people. Our community boasts a diverse, cultural mix of Hispanic, Native American and Asian populations. Each fall, the city also hosts the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, the most photographed event in the world. Albuquerque enjoys year-round sunshine and four distinct seasons, making it a wonderful place for the outdoor enthusiast.
