The School of Medicine medical education program equips students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential for delivering compassionate and effective health care in a continuously evolving healthcare landscape. The UNM SOM competencies and objectives guide student learning and inform curriculum design and innovation.
Central to the curriculum is the cultivation of skills vital for lifelong learning. This is achieved through the integration of foundational medical sciences and clinical medicine, utilizing self-directed and interactive learning methods, and fostering the progressive development of clinical reasoning skills via a problem-based approach. Students engage in early and consistent clinical experiences, where they learn to care for patients within the context of their community and culture. The program also places significant emphasis on the formation of professional identity and the importance of personal and professional well-being.
