Join us for a powerful and reflective conversation on cultural humility, historical truth-telling, and the humanity of those whose stories shaped modern medicine. This session centers the lives of Anarcha, Betsey, and Lucy, enslaved Black women whose bodies were used in 19th-century gynecological experimentation by J. Marion Sims.
Through narrative, legal insight, and bioethics, Professor Alford reframes the historical record by centering the women’s humanity rather than the physician’s legacy. Participants will reflect on how history, race, gender, and power continue to shape health care and professional practice today.
