Arelis is originally from Kansas City, MO. She came to UNM because she knew the university’s nursing programs would help her pursue her passion for advancing access to quality health care. Her interests outside of nursing are spending time with her partner and dog, hiking and reading good books. She firmly believes in creating a peaceful life filled with simplicity and care.
“As a graduate student in the nurse-midwifery program, I feel like I’m in a totally different atmosphere than undergraduate education. Right away the curriculum was specialty-focused and I am learning from a passionate faculty in a small, family-like cohort,” says Arelis.
From Albuquerque, Nina is a highly educated nursing professional currently working for Presbyterian Hospital. She is pursuing a doctorate from Yale University and is focusing on implicit bias and how it affects perinatal health outcomes. She loves spending time with her partner and their combined six children. Her blended family loves to travel and hike together.
“I love leading women’s development of families. The College of Nursing’s program focuses on each individual student finding their niche and faculty really nurture their independent interests. It is something that sets them apart and prepares students to be successful CNMs (certified nurse-midwives),” says Nina.
Dr. Migliaccio started at UNM as a nurse-midwifery student in 1996 and has been part of the university ever since- as a clinical midwife, preceptor and program director/faculty. During her time here the program has grown and shifted with more focus on diversity and equity and more hands-on learning.
“I am grateful to the UNM program for its deep roots, strong community connections and continued evolution. It has been a pleasure to see nurse-midwifery at UNM grow to include simulation and inter-professional activities that prepare students for their careers. My love for the program has also grown and I am deeply proud to be a New Mexico Nurse-Midwife and UNM Lobo!” says Laura.
