The ‘Equal Health: Health Promotion in Collaboration’ began in 2017 in Scania, South Sweden, as an initiative to implement a health promotion organization and collaborative partnerships in urban socially deprived areas that experience high crime and violence. Stakeholders from the public and private health sector, businesses, and non-profit organizations, along with local residents were invited to collaborate with the university researchers to support grassroots actions. During the visioning and planning stages of the project, the collaboration created their own CBPR model to set goals for the organization and project. The model helped to identify important contextual factors and societal issues within their community and how it affected their partnership processes and engagement with community members. The development of the model was focused on ways to meet community needs and allowed for shared power among stakeholders, mutual trust-building, and a commitment to ongoing democratic dialogue.
