2019 Perioperative Crisis Management

This course is designed for the CAA/CRNA working in a medical direction model. In this course you will experience skills workshops and learn effective communication techniques for crisis management. Each participant will participate as the primary clinician in a scenario and will be in the roll of a peer assistant during crisis management in other scenarios.

All simulation programs will take place at the UNM Basic Advanced Trauma Computer-Assisted Virtual Experience (BATCAVE) facility in the basement of the Clinical and Translational Sciences Center located just north of the UNM Hospital. (https://batcave.unm.edu/)

Target Audience: CAA’s or CRNA’s

Goal/Objectives

The goal of Perioperative Crisis Management is to:

  1. Identify evolving hemodynamic instability and create a plan to initiate treatment.
  2. Perform effective handoffs and effectively include new team members in managing an evolving crisis.
  3. Discuss and practice strategies for effective communication during team-based crisis management.

Debriefing is a significant part of simulation education. Peer discussion and discussion of the literature informing best practices will be at least 50% of the time during the course.
