2019 Medical Conference: Teaching Oral Health to Medical and Nursing Providers

Target Audience

You should attend if you are a primary care or hospitalist pediatrician, pediatric subspecialist, family or general practice physician, hospital or university faculty, maternal or fetal medicine physician, neonatologist, resident or medical student, nurse, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant.

Conference Description

The 2019 conference is presented by the Department of Dental Medicine and Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development. The keynote presentation will discuss the UNM HSC project that has successfully incorporated basic oral health practices into an existing medical clinic. Provider roles and tools will be presented.

Conference Objectives

  1. Describe how to successfully incorporate basic oral health practices into existing medical clinics.
  2. Describe the use of fluoride into primary care and successfully apply fluoride varnish.
  3. Describe basic risk assessments and radiograph interpretation principles.
  4. Recognize common dental issues and their relationship with pharmacology.
  5. Perform head and neck exams.
  6. Describe the relationship between oral health and overall health.
  7. Describe oral manifestations and treatment regimens for individuals with HIV infection.
  8. Apply the exams, risk assessments and fluoride therapies to individuals with special needs.

Registration Fees

Your registration fee includes conference materials, a continental breakfast, refreshment breaks and lunch. Minimum and maximum numbers have been established for this conference; therefore, your pre-registration will be confirmed by email. Please present your Confirmation Letter at the registration desk. Registrations paid in cash must be in the exact amount of tuition. CME does not maintain a petty cash fund. It is UNM policy to charge the offerer $35.00 plus normal merchant bank fees for each returned check. Make check payable to: UNM Continuing Medical Education & Professional Development and mail it along with registration form to: UNM CME, MSC09 5370, 1 University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM 87131-0001. If you pre-register and cannot attend, Continuing Medical Education & Professional Development will refund tuition, less a $40.00 administrative fee, provided it is received in writing on or before January 23, 2019. No refunds will be issued after this date or for non-attendance. Conferences are subject to cancellation.  In the event this conference is cancelled, the UNM CME is not responsible for any airfare, hotel or other costs incurred by participants.

UNM Tuition Remission

All eligible UNM Faculty and Staff may enroll using a UNM Tuition Remission (waiver) to cover tuition costs listed on the registration form. PLEASE DO NOT USE THE ONLINE REGISTRATION SITE. Proper completion includes all required signatures. No refund or credit will be issued for non-attendance.

We do not have a room block secured for these courses. However, if you need hotel accommodations, you may way to select one of these hotels. Participants are responsible for their own transportation between the two sites.

Conference Site and Parking

The conference will be held at Novitski Hall on the University of New Mexico North Campus. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from the conference site.  A parking permit will be provided; however, parking in Reserved, Patient or Official parking spaces is prohibited. Please adhere to all parking signs and regulations in order to avoid a citation. A campus map will be emailed to you, along with your confirmation letter.
