Area Health Education Center

The New Mexico Area Health Education Center (NM AHEC) belongs to a federally funded national network dedicated to growing a diverse health care workforce and serving rural and underserved communities by offering innovative health career curricula to pre-collegiate students.

AHEC Scholars are leaders in their fields with the knowledge and skills to improve primary care practice outcomes through inter-professional and collaborative training.

New Mexico AHEC is a charter member of the National AHEC Organization, comprised of 56 AHEC programs and more than 235 centers operating in almost every state and the District of Columbia.

AHEC's focus areas

Develop the health professionals pipeline for underserved communities by engaging with young people in schools and through special events

Encourage Health Professions students to work in underserved communities by providing financial support for clinical rotations in rural and underserved settings

Support health professional retention and culturally sensitive and regionally appropriate health care via continuing education.

AHEC Centers

The main AHEC office for NM is located at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
Montañas del Norte AHEC, located in Las Vegas, N.M., serves 15 counties in northern New Mexico.
Southern Area Health Education serves 13 counties in southern New Mexico.
FORWARD NM AHEC serves four southwestern New Mexico counties. Both are based in in Silver City, N.M.
