Infectious Disease
Bill was born in Laramie, WY and spent summers in a log cabin with a lean-to kitchen in the Snowy Range near Centennial, WY. He graduated from both Harvard University (‘55) and Harvard Medical School (‘59) followed by an internship and 1st year medicine residency at George Washington Hospital in Washington, DC. He married Ellen Hill in 1957 and was drafted into the army. In 1969, Bill moved to New Mexico, completed a two-year fellowship in Infectious Disease, and joined the VA hospital and the faculty of the UNM Medical School as professor of Infectious Disease. Bill was appointed as Associate Chief of Staff for Research in 1974 and served as Interim Associate Dean of Research at UNM in 1999. He served as a member and then chairman of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at the medical school for many years, continuing after he was emeritus at the medical school. During his career he authored nearly 100 scientific publications and textbook chapters, and mentored numerous students and fellows. Ellen and Bill enjoyed traveling with mushroom enthusiasts and family all over the world. The family gathers annually returning to the cabin in Wyoming. Bill was a devoted woodworker and never lost his interest in learning. He had a strong commitment to academic medicine, with clarity of values of excellence, and pride for outstanding patient care. Clearly, a wonderful role model for many medical students, interns, and residents.
He was a long standing friend and colleague for more than 50 years.
