Pratap Shanker Avasthi, MD

Pratap was born in India, and immigrated to Albuquerque in 1966 to pursue a residency in Internal Medicine at UNM SOM. He was a nephrologist with a major interest in academic research. Pratap was a polite, quiet colleague with excellent creative thinking. His work was both clinical at the bedside, as well as in the laboratory. A man of considerable flexibility. He retired in 1996 but continued interests in astrophysics and space exploration. He was also a determined runner, and enjoyed long morning runs that let him watch he sun rise over the Sandia Mountains. He is survived by his wife Pushpa, his children, Sui of Albuquerque, Smita of Sana Rosa CA, and Swati (John) of Minneapolis; and his grandchildren Nicholas and Isabel.

I met him in the laboratory when I had a Graduate Student visiting from Italy with technical initiatives that paralleled those of Pratap. It has been a pleasure for me to know Pratap, and to recall the many times he and I discussed his laboratory data in his lab. A fine man and friend with excellent perceptions. A very kind person who brought value to any group
