Beloved professor, clinician, and researcher Kenneth F. Crumley, MD, MPH, died on September 28, 2021. Dr. Crumley first came to the UNM Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in 1979. For 42 years, he tirelessly served New Mexican children, youth, and their families, always striving to improve their mental health and overall well-being. This approach permeated all of his work which, at times, also included dual positions at Presbyterian Medical Group and the NMDOH Sequoyah Adolescent Treatment Center. In addition, he worked in Gallup, NM, with the Indian Health Service. While there, he created the first Navajo language medical dictionary.
At UNM, Dr. Crumley established a training program in child and adolescent psychiatry and served as medical director at the Children’s Psychiatric Center for several years. He trained hundreds of clinicians who now also work to make life better for their patients. Those who had the opportunity to learn and work with Dr. Crumley characterize him as a dedicated, compassionate, and calm teacher, mentor, and provider. He was always available for his patients and to support learners. His wealth of knowledge, often shared with a dry sense of humor, was both inspirational and helpful.
Many will remember Dr. Crumley playing a relaxed game of pool with patients at CPC, talking with staff, or simply walking around North Campus with his signature cowboy hat.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you contribute to a program that works to support the mental health of New Mexico’s children and adolescents.
