Our colleague and beloved friend Gregory C. Davenport, PhD, PCPH, MLT(ASCP) passed away unexpectedly on August 21, 2013.
Dr. Davenport was born in Philadelphia, PA on April 21, 1972. He grew up in Philadelphia and completed his degree in Medical Laboratory Technology in 1993 at Montgomery County College (Blue Bell, PA). He then went on to obtain his BSc in Clinical Microbiology at Gwynedd-Mercy College (Blue Bell, PA) in 2002 and his MSc and Certificate in Public Health at Thomas Jefferson University (Philadelphia, PA) in 2004.
Dr. Davenport then joined Dr. Douglas J. Perkins' laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh where he completed his PhD in Infectious Disease and Microbiology in 2010 with his thesis entitled, “Role of HIV-1 and Bacteremia in Promoting Inflammatory Mediator Production in Kenyan Children with Severe Malarial Anemia”. After completion of his doctoral studies, he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Center for Global Health at The University of New Mexico. After completion of this training, he worked as a Contractor for the Department of Defense on projects in East Africa and the Former Soviet Union. He returned to The University of New Mexico in 2012 and joined the faculty as a Research Assistant Professor in the Center for Global Health.
Dr. Davenport had a prolific publication and funding record and achieved excellence in the field of Infectious Diseases. His departure is truly a loss to the scientific community, both personally and professionally. He had outstanding success at UNM and at the various international sites where he had an extremely positive and lasting impact.
Greg reported to me while he worked in a pharma microbiology laboratory, eventually being promoted to manager. He was affable and competent. He was also a good friend. I will miss him.
