Dr. James Michael Kunkel graduated from the University of Notre Dame and Wayne State University Medical School, with distinction. He was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He completed General Surgery Residency at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. After eight years of service in the Army Medical Corps, he left active duty with the rank of Major. Following his military service, he completed a fellowship in General Vascular Surgery at the University of California in Los Angeles. In 1988, he became the first Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery at the University of New Mexico Hospital and at the Veteran's Hospital. He was a member of the Rocky Mountain Vascular Society and the Society of Vascular Surgeons.
