Dr. Robert Alliot Munsick graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in 1954. Following medical school, Dr. Munsick earned a Ph.D. in pharmacology also from Columbia. Dr. Munsick served as a captain in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1955-57, and then on the OB/GYN faculty at the University of Colorado in Denver until 1965 when he was appointed as the founding chair of the UNM Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a position he held until 1972.
At the time of his appointment, he was the youngest professor and chairman at any medical school in the United States. During his tenure as chair at the UNM School of Medicine, Dr. Munsick recruited a solid faculty, increased the number of residents to four per year and established a midwifery program. After leaving the UNM School of Medicine in 1972, he joined the faculty of the Indiana University. He received the University of Indiana Herman Frederic Lieber Award Distinguished Teaching Award in 1982.
