Marsha Thompson, MD, PhD, joined the Division of Pulmonology and Critical Care in the Department of Pediatrics at UNM as Assistant Professor in 1996. Previous to that time she received her MD degree at Baylor College of Medicine in 1987, completed her pediatric residency at Baylor in 1990, and was a pediatric pulmonary fellow at the University of California San Francisco from 1990-1994. She was on the faculty at UC San Francisco prior to her recruitment to UNM.
Marsha directed the Cystic Fibrosis Center at UNM for about five years. She received the Lucy Matthew Physician Scientist Award from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and was awarded a research grant from the American Lung Association. She developed an active research program in cystic fibrosis and served on the board of the Albuquerque chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. She was a recognized leader in the cystic fibrosis field and was a strong advocate for her patients. She had a significant impact on health care in New Mexico. She left UNM in 2000 to accompany her family to Las Vegas, NV and died from a malignant brain tumor at the age of 45.
