Psychiatry
1928-2016
Eberhard H. Uhlenhuth died June 7, 2016. He was 88 years old. “Uhli,” born in Baltimore, MD, graduated from Yale University Phi Beta Kappa in 1947 with a BS in Chemistry. He received his MD degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1951. He interned at Harborview Hospital in Seattle where he met his future wife, Helen Lyman. They married six months later and moved to Baltimore, where he was a psychiatric resident at Johns Hopkins and then served on the faculty there. After a few stops along the way, including the University of Chicago, he joined UNM in 1985 where he served as full professor and later attained the rank of Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry in 2005. He continued to work at the University even after “retirement.” He was passionate about medical research and the training of young psychiatrists.
Uhli was a gentle, gracious and intellectual man, deeply loved for his thoughtfulness and dedication. His family and many others will miss him greatly.
