Hear From Our Residents

Here at UNM we have great access to a wide variaty of diagnostic and treatment modalities such as confocal and many laser therapies. Everyone receives strong hands-on experience in procedural dermatology to treat the wide variety of clinical presentations our diverse patient population produces. New Mexico itself also presents many opportunities for various outdoor and city activities and hobbies with beautiful mountain and desert landscaps. There is always something new to explore, both in the wilderness as well as through the state's rich cultural heritage.
Kory Lee, What distinguishes the UNM Dermatology Department?
Our residency program sees a high clinical volume which lends itself to bread-and-butter cases, as well as the "zebras" of dermatology. This patient population is incredibly rewarding to serve. Our continuity experience is an amazing opportunity to carry our own panel, enact our plans, and see how our decision-making impacts our patients. I am incredibly lucky to train alongside fantastic co-residents, many of whom have worked along side our faculty to craft our fantastic didactic curriculum. Our faculty to resident ratio is quite small, so I feel that I can foster wonderful relationships with the faculty. Albuquerque is a beautiful place to live, work, and have fun. There is a vibrant food and craft beer scene. We have so many places to hike and explore as well!
Cyrelle Fermin, What distinguishes the UNM Dermatology Department?
At UNM, the focus on clinical excellency is a guiding principle in clinic and didactics and is embodied by the faculty and residents. As the only academic center in all of New Mexico, our breadth of medical and surgical dermatology is extensive and the residents receive comprehensive training in all facets of dermatology. The collective enthusiasm for dermatology of my co-residents and faculty brightens every moment of my training.
Jiasen Wang, What distinguishes the UNM Dermatology Department?
UNM serves a large and diverse population. Classic cases as well as rare pathology is demonstrated daily, making the training very well rounded. Being a small program, we as residents get to know each other and get one-on-one time with the faculty who are extremely approachable and love to teach. Residents are supported financially in terms of textbooks and conference attendence. The didactics curriculum is designed to build on itself and is parallel to the dermpath curriculum, making it rigourous but very doable. Living is Albuquerque is amazing -- hiking, skiing, mountain biking, amazing food, low cost of living.
