The UNM EMS Consortium Operational Medicine Program is a team of specially trained paramedics and physicians who support tactical law enforcement operations throughout the Albuquerque metro area and across New Mexico. The program began in 2013 to provide medical support to the New Mexico State Police Tactical Team. Dr. Drew Harrell currently serves as the team’s Operational Medical Director. The team is a statewide deployable resource available 24/7/365. It includes specially trained Tactical Paramedics, Operational Medicine EMS Physicians, two Team Leaders, and one Assistant Team Leader.
Team members have access to direct online medical direction through the EMS Consortium Medical Director program at all times. Physicians may also deploy alongside on-call paramedics during field operations based on the needs and risk assessment of each mission. Each paramedic has a minimum of three years of experience working in a high-volume EMS system. Team members are required to attend quarterly training and serve three 24-hour on-call shifts each month. The program provides operational medical support to New Mexico State Police Special Operations Teams, including SWAT, EOD, Dive, and Aviation, as well as the Rio Rancho Police Department SWAT Team. The program supports approximately 150 to 200 missions each year in partnership with participating agencies.
The team also has the ability to administer prehospital blood through the University of New Mexico Blood Bank.
