Our commitment to diversity and inclusion extends to our academic offerings. Join us in FCM.
We support diversity and inclusion and we promote equity in culture, gender, race, ethnicity, age, physical ability, sexual orientation, spiritual/religious beliefs and socio-economic status and believe this paves the way for developing and sustaining a climate and culture of inclusion in our department.
Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) are the key drivers in supporting excellence in education, research and healthcare. Addressing problems through different perspectives allows us to be more creative in implementing innovative solutions and fosters understanding and respect of unique cultures and beliefs.
Our mission is to embrace the principles of DEI and incorporate them throughout our mission areas as we partner with communities to enhance the health and well-being of the people of New Mexico and address patient needs.
Founded in 1889, the University of New Mexico sits on the traditional homelands of the Pueblo of Sandia. The original peoples of New Mexico – Pueblo, Navajo, and Apache – since time immemorial, have deep connections to the land and have made significant contributions to the broader community statewide.
We honor the land itself and those who remain stewards of this land throughout the generations and also acknowledge our committed relationship to Indigenous peoples. We gratefully recognize our history.

We also recognize the role that modern medical education, research, and health care delivery have played in upholding racist structures. We are committed to dismantling those racist structures in our day-to-day work as educators, researchers and clinicians.

To fully realize and appreciate the value of the world's diversity, we must reflect upon our distinct understanding and experiences.
We invite you to reflect on the following:
Inclusion is a core element for successfully achieving diversity. Inclusion is achieved by nurturing the climate and culture of the institution through professional development, education, policy and practice. The objective is to create a climate that fosters belonging, respect, and value for all and encourages engagement and connection throughout the institution and community.
Equity is when everyone can attain their full potential. In such an environment, no one is disadvantaged because of their position or other socially determined circumstance.
