One-year fellowship to subspecialize in Sleep Medicine in New Mexico
505-272-4751UNM Sleep Disorders Center is a leader in improving healthcare for New Mexicans. We were the first comprehensive sleep disorders center in New Mexico (est. 1983) and remains the only academic sleep medicine facility in the state. Our facility is fully accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations.
Sleep medicine experts at UNM deliver highly specialized patient care, education, and research. Our department and education programs are staffed by sleep medicine experts from:
There are also opportunities to observe dental and otolaryngologic facets of sleep medicine.
The Sleep Medicine Fellowship aims to:
This is an ACGME Accredited twelve-month fellowship with two fellows per year.
The primary site is the University of New Mexico Sleep Disorders Center with six beds and an interdisciplinary faculty and clinic. The secondary site is the New Mexico Raymond G Murphy Veterans Affairs Hospital with four beds, which also heavily employs home sleep apnea testing (~1400 home studies/year). There is a 15-minute driving time between the two sites. Both facilities implement polysomnograms (PSGs) using Nihon Khodon, allowing continuity between the two sites. Multiple different home testing devices are utilized at both sites.
Sleep fellows have Home Call, typically alternating every other week. We place a strong emphasis on utilizing technology to provide the most up-to-date care possible. With our large geographic area of coverage, remote/telehealth is frequently utilized to treat our more rural patients.
Our Sleep Fellowship Program also is closely associated with the Pulmonary Program, with some shared didactics and the potential for pulmonary fellows to rotate on Sleep Medicine. Having a basic understanding of pulmonary physiology is highly stressed in our program.
Our curriculum is provided in didactic and clinical formats in the setting of a diverse patient population. The clinical training experiences include adult and pediatric sleep clinics, inpatient consults, outpatient consults, polysomnogram interpretation, research opportunities at both sites, and involvement in community professional organizations (New Mexico Sleep Society and the American Thoracic Society). Fellows will also present research at the annual American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) national meeting.
