The Integrative Medicine Track is a great option for those interested in practicing evidence-based approaches focused on the whole person, utalizing a combination of mind-body stategies, manual therapies, herbs, and nutrition. The curriculum for this special training track will be taught in a longitudinal way over the course of two or three years.
The core of the curriculum is based on the award-winning Integrative Medicine in Residency modules, through the University of Arizona's Center for Integrative Medicine (ACIM). The learning experience will be supported by medical faculty trained in Integrative Medicine by way of dedicated monthly Integrative Medicine sessions and workshops during Y week, as well as an additional three-week elective to provide more time for completing the modules.
This track will address topics in a hands-on and cased-based way that are often neglected in conventional medicine training. Topics will include: nutrition, mind-body medicine, acupuncture, stress reduction techniques, lifestyle change, motivational interviewing, evidence-based use of herbal supplements, manual therapies, spirituality, culturally competent care, as well as self-care.
The Integrative Medicine Track will provide you with the tools needed to provide excellent care for your patients - especially those with chronic disease or who are not responding to conventional medicine. It is designed to offer additional training and education using the tools and philosophy of the Andrew Weil Integrative Medicine curriculum designed for Internal Medicine.
The track begins in July of the intern year. Categorical residents may apply.
All residents are required to complete a minimum of 80% of the learning modules by graduation and take a final exam to be eligible for a certificate in Integrative Medicine through the ACIM. The online curriculum is 200 hours over three years. The track also requires attendance at our monthly four-hour Y week sessions to review IM topics, receive mentoring, and participate in Integrative Medicine activities.
Workshops will take place during Y-week and cover a wide range of topics; they will be hands on and geared toward resident interests. Examples include:
New Mexico Community experiences, dependent on resident interest and availabilty, can include:

What do our 2023-2024 members have to say about the Integrative Medicine Track?
"I am very interested in acupuncture and other non-conventional techniques that we use in pain management for patients in oncology, as this is a very interesting pathway that I want to follow. So, I am very grateful for all the things I have learned with the modules. I'm excited to keep learning." Oscar Borja-Montes, PGY2
"I think Integrative Medicine is a field that is the future of medicine. Getting to be a part of that as it is becoming more and more influential to physicians and patients is fascinating. I am thrilled to be able to work with people who are like-minded and to be able to work through the modules as a structured learning. I plan to use these skills in my personal life as well as with my future patients." Erika Clark, PGY3
