Future Students

Thank you for your interest in the University of New Mexico Master of Social Work Program. The UNM MSW program prepares students for advanced social work practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities, with a strong commitment to the cultures and communities of New Mexico. Students benefit from small cohort sizes that support deeper learning, stronger relationships, and meaningful faculty engagement.

Prospective students apply through the UNM Graduate Application and must submit all required admission materials before their application is reviewed. Required materials include transcripts, a personal statement, three professional or academic letters of recommendation, and a current résumé or CV. Applications are reviewed only after all materials are complete.

Program Concentrations

The UNM MSW program offers two concentration options—Clinical Social Work and Medical Social Work—designed to prepare students for advanced, community-responsive practice in clinical settings. Each concentration combines specialized coursework with hands-on practicum learning, helping students develop the skills to serve individuals, families, and communities facing complex behavioral health, medical, and social challenges. Students are supported throughout the practicum process by the Field Education Office, which provides individualized guidance and helps connect them with placements at UNM and community partner sites.

Traditional MSW Program
This program is the option for students who do not hold a bachelor’s degree in social work from an accredited program. It follows a traditional two-year course of study, with cohorts beginning in both the fall and spring semesters. Students complete the program by progressing through a structured plan of study each semester, following the prescribed curriculum sequence to build knowledge and skills in a logical and integrated way.

Note: Some people who already hold a bachelor’s degree in social work, especially if the degree was obtained several years ago, may wish to apply into the Traditional 2-year program.
