Your Education

• 8 consecutive terms completed in under 3 years
• 63 credits in total, 750 clinical hours, 100 lab hours and 300 systems thinking/project hours
• Courses are delivered in hybrid format
• Followed by a dedicated 4 to 5 week period of clinical rotation
• At least 1 of your clinical rotations will be in a rural or underserved community, typically outside of Albuquerque
• When you complete this program, you will earn a Doctor of Nursing Practice
• Graduates will be eligible to take the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner - Primary Care certifying examination through The Pediatric Nursing Certification Board

You will start your experience at UNM in an orientation with all of our incoming Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner students. Building your interprofessional community. And continue your first term before breaking out into your concentration cohorts – pediatric nurse practitioner.

Clinical experiences will help you apply what you have learned into practice. All while gaining skills that help you be an effective nurse practitioner.

Upon completion of the curriculum you with finish with 63 credits including, 750 clinical hours, 100 lab hours and 300 systems thinking/project hours.

You Will Be Prepared.

Completing the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner – Primary Care Program prepares you to:

• Provide full scope primary care, utilizing both independent and collaborative approaches, to children and families including management of acute and chronic health problems, health promotion, disease prevention, and support for transitional and end-of-life needs Integrate ethical principles in decision-making and evaluation of the care across the lifespan, diverse populations, and systems of care.
• Integrate ethical principles in decision-making and evaluation of care related to children, families, populations, and systems of care.
• Coordinate health care through interdisciplinary collaboration with members of the health care team.
• Appropriately empower and motivate children and families to be full participants in their own health care.
• Advocate for systems and policies that reduce health disparities, respect cultural diversity, facilitate access to care, and address healthcare for rural populations.
• Assume professional responsibility for maintaining and advancing clinical practice competencies.
• Participate in quality assurance and evaluation of health care delivery.
• Use and articulate evidence-informed research as the basis for practice.
• Contribute to existing knowledge through participation in research.
