Sterling Edwards, MD
My special recollection of Dr. Edwards is that he focused and supported education for medical students and residents on the importance of good communication with patients. Early in my career, I applied for and received funding from him and his family's generous funds for my initial training and skills development in doctor-patient communication through the Bayer Institute for Healthcare Communication. Together with Dr. Peter Barnett, we developed a curriculum in clinical communication skills for the School of Medicine. We held faculty development seminars, designed courses and clinical skills assessment activities that have continued to this day for students and residents. Though superseded by the requirements of the LCME and ACGME, his initial support was crucial to the pioneering efforts to educate in this area.
