MS4 Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine at SRMC

This one-month sub-internship at The University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque is open to fourth-year medical students who have an interest in anesthesiology in a community hospital setting.

The sub-internship takes place at the UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center (SRMC), which conducts a number of surgeries, including:

  • Total joint replacement
  • Bariatric
  • General surgical
  • Urologic
  • Robotically assisted
  • Orthopedic
  • Ear, nose and throat cases

Building skills

The anesthesiology department is staffed by full-time UNM faculty with expertise in regional anesthetic techniques. The sub-intern will be mentored by one of the attending anesthesiologists and the mid-level anesthesia provider (AA or CRNA) also assigned to the suite.

The sub-intern will be assigned to a room Monday through Thursday and will have an opportunity to participate in all aspects of the peri-operative management of the patients assigned to that suite, including pre-operative evaluation, patient preparation induction, maintenance, emergence and post-operative care.

Didactic activities

In addition, the sub-intern will participate in the following didactic activities:

  • Anesthesiology grand rounds
  • Resident CA-1 and CA-2 Friday lecture series
  • Thursday afternoon ultrasound guided regional anesthesia resident lectures

Friday afternoons are reserved for independent study/reading (students will be provided with a copy of a standard introductory anesthesiology text). On the final Friday of the month, the student will make a case presentation to the SRMC staff.
