Medical Education Scholars

The Medical Education Scholars (MES) program provides opportunities for participants to develop a foundational understanding of the education literature while gaining experience in developing and implementing scholarly contributions to medical education.

All School of Medicine faculty are welcome to apply. In addition, the College of Pharmacy and College of Nursing each select one participant for each MES cohort. Accepted applicants spend the equivalent of one-half day every week in year one, and two-half days per month in year two developing their academic leadership skills and educational expertise in curriculum development, teaching and assessment, and educational research and scholarship.

The Medical Education Scholars (MES) program will undergo a review and planning process during the upcoming fiscal year (July 2019-June 2020).  Due to this process, we are not seeking applications for a new MES cohort in the upcoming year.  During 2019-2020, we plan to engage multiple stakeholders requesting their input to ensure that MES is meeting the needs at UNMHSC while providing the most robust program possible in education scholarship and scholarly teaching. The Office of Education looks forward to engaging faculty interested in medical education along with department and School of Medicine leadership to refresh our approach to supporting the scholarship of teaching and learning.  If you desire to participate in this upcoming planning process, please contact Craig Timm, MD, Senior Associate Dean of Education (
