Fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine

Become an expert in perinatology during The University of New Mexico Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine fellowship, a three-year program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Clinical Experience

If selected as a fellow, your clinical responsibilities will resemble those of junior faculty and be distinct from resident duties. You’ll work with and supervise residents in:

  • Antepartum ward and clinics
  • Labor and delivery
  • Special and intensive care units
  • Ultrasound and genetics

For complex obstetrical cases, such as placenta accretas, an algorithm ensures that residents and fellows take turns to gain plenty of experience. Expect to perform procedures such as:

To Apply

Apply to the MFM fellowship through the Electronic Residency Application Service. For more information, email Lisa LaMastra.

  • Cervical cerclages
  • Chorionic villous samplings
  • Cordocenteses
  • Doppler evaluations
  • Fetal echocardiography examinations
  • Genetic amniocenteses
  • Therapeutic amnioreductions

Statewide Referral Center

Almost all the complex, invasive procedures in New Mexico take place at UNM Hospital. As the only Level I trauma center in New Mexico, the hospital supports the most advanced technology in obstetrical, surgical and medical subspecialty care. Subspecialists are available 24 hours a day for consultation.

Consultative Roles

Under faculty supervision, you advise residents, midwives, general obstetricians and family medicine faculty on complicated obstetric cases at UNM. You’ll also provide telephone consultations in New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado through the Physician Access Line Service.

Additional Duties

You’ll usually be the point person for inpatient or ambulatory patient transfers. Learn to evaluate the risks, benefits and costs of transporting each patient to our facility.

You’ll also provide outreach services to rural clinics serving diverse populations.

Continuity of Patient Care

Care for patients throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period at a weekly outpatient continuity clinic. You’ll see the same patients upon hospital admission and may take part in their labor and delivery care if your schedule allows. After delivery, these patients are admitted to the MFM service and receive care from you before discharge.

Research

By the end of the fellowship, fellows average four to six research projects, most presented at national scientific meetings and published in peer-reviewed journals. Access support through:

Scholarly Activity Curriculum

Curriculum for scholarly activities includes:

Meet Us

Meet the maternal fetal medicine faculty and fellows.

  • Basic science techniques taught through didactic instruction and hands-on lab experience
  • Epidemiology instruction
  • Grant writing training through the department and the CTSC
  • Institutional Review Board (IRB) training
  • Manuscript preparation
  • Statistics workshops
  • Study design, ethics and conflict of interest training

You’ll gain the knowledge and skills to become an independent investigator.

Thesis

Review progress on your thesis with the fellowship director regularly starting no later than the beginning of your second year. You’ll present the thesis project at our annual Women’s Health Research Symposium and at national scientific meetings. Defend your thesis in May of your third year, after completing your manuscript.

Didactic Sessions

During weekly didactic sessions, expect to cover general maternal and fetal medicine and ultrasound. A weekly multidisciplinary case review explores all current fetal anomalies and selected fetal complications, selected maternal complications and neonatal outcomes. The review includes a didactic presentation by a neonatal or MFM fellow.
