Division of General Surgery

The University of New Mexico General Surgery Residency Program is a fully accredited program that graduates five chief residents per year. The program is well-rounded with excellent exposure to surgical experiences in both community and university hospitals.

Meet our Faculty

Surgery residents serve a patient population with a broad spectrum of diseases. Additionally, UNM Hospital is New Mexico's only Level 1 Trauma Center and residents are exposed to a great deal of penetrating trauma and complex, extensive burns. Our program strengths include trauma/critical care, laparoscopic surgery, oncologic surgery, pediatric surgery, and vascular surgery. Residents rotate to a variety of hospitals including UNM Health facilities, the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Lovelace Medical Center, Presbyterian Hospital and St. Vincent Hospital in Santa Fe.

We aim to develop leaders in clinical surgery and are proud of our record. Approximately 50% of graduates go on to work as general surgeons in community and academic practices. Half pursue fellowships, and in past years have secured positions in pediatric surgery, trauma/critical care, plastics and colorectal surgery. Our residents have performed well on the American Board of Surgery's qualifying and certifying examinations.
