Third year UNM medical students may complete a one-week rotation in anesthesia. This rotation is conducted through the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care and availability is limited.
As a medical student in this phase two rotation, you will learn basic concepts in applied pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, IV placement and airway management. These skills are crucial not only for those becoming anesthesiologists, but for physicians in other specialties such as family practice. To learn more about this rotation, click here.
What You Will Learn
Build on your current medical and pharmacology knowledge. Examples of concepts you will learn include:
Analgesics
Basic drug dosing guidelines
Drug classes such as induction agents, opioids and muscle relaxants
Drug effects on organ systems
Rapid sequence induction on patients at risk of pulmonary aspiration
Sedation and general anesthesia
Titration of drugs based on patient pathophysiology
You will also participate in an interactive teaching session using simulated patients to practice general anesthesia scenarios.
Students who are interested in more exposure may complete an anesthesia elective during their fourth year. Please contact Candice Gurule for more information.
