The Department of Cell Biology and Physiology is an academic unit of the University of New Mexico School of Medicine that focuses on the study of fundamental cellular processes and their relationship to human development, function and disease. The Cell Biology and Physiology Department is committed to collaboration and discovery as the means to advance scientific knowledge, best practices in education and mentoring, and to provide service to the university and the broader community.
Established in 1997, our work focuses on the study of biological structure, fundamental cellular and physiological processes and their relationships to human disease.
To maintain a department with a supportive, stimulating and stable scientific environment that provides an equal opportunity for faculty, staff, and trainees to synergistically realize their personal and collective professional goals.
To maintain accessible teaching programs using effective communication and education principles and latest findings of cell and developmental biology, anatomical science, cancer biology and physiology to educate learners, staff and faculty in the basic, clinical and allied health sciences at the University of New Mexico and the citizens of the state of New Mexico.
To achieve outstanding research in the fields of cell and developmental biology, cellular biochemistry and biophysics, and physiology, as evidenced by high-quality, peer-reviewed publications; individual and department recognition; and a strong record of external financial support.
To mentor colleagues in this and other institutions who are interested in research and education disciplines represented by the faculty in this department.
To effectively interface departmental faculty research to the clinical departments of the School of Medicine, the Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Clinical & Translational Research Center.
To operate shared facilities in electron microscopy and anatomical education for the UNM Health Sciences Center.
