Welcome!
The University Of New Mexico Department of Emergency Medicine offers a one-year ACGME- accredited EMS Fellowship. Our fellowship is designed to provide vigorous training for future EMS Physician leaders. We offer 3 spots annually for Emergency Medicine trained physicians to gain experience in all aspects of EMS Medical Direction, EMS Research, EMS Policy, and Clinical Prehospital Medicine. Our EMS Fellows are active members of the UNM EMS Consortium and participate in the EMS Consortium Physician Field Response Program. The Fellows work alongside our 9 EMS Board Certified Faculty members as well as EMS providers from our 70+ partner EMS agencies. Our fellowship was fully accredited by the ACGME in 2013 with retroactive approval to October of 2012, and graduates are eligible to take the ABEM EMS Subspecialty Board Exam. Fellows will have exposure to Urban EMS, Rural EMS, Air Medical Services, Search and Rescue, Wilderness and Austere Medicine, Tactical EMS, Event Medicine/ Mass Gathering and many more. We have had 25 fellows graduate from the UNM EMS Fellowship!
One of the three fellowship positions focuses specifically on Rural & Tribal EMS, working closely with our UNM Center for Rural and Tribal EMS. Rural EMS Fellows will have the opportunity to work closely with rural and frontier counties of New Mexico, tribal EMS agencies, and remote National Park Service agencies, including Grand Canyon National Park and Zion National Park. The unique challenges of rural and austere EMS will be explored, including the development of extended care 911 protocols, community paramedicine strategies in remote locations, and approaches to austere and wilderness medical care.

Once off and running, the rest of the year is focused on learning how to be an EMS Physician. Fellows are assigned an EMS faculty mentor who will provide 1:1 mentorship alongside the Program Director in structured and unstructured activities throughout the year.
At the beginning of the fellowship year, each fellow will be assigned to a particular fire shift to facilitate learning and the transition to a new city. Rotating cycle schedules are commonplace in the fire service and provide a perfect structure upon which to build a curriculum to train EMS physicians. Each of the program’s three fellows are assigned to one of three shifts (A, B, or C) that mirror the local fire department schedule; 48 hours on, 96 hours off cycle. The fellows remain on the same shift for the duration of the year to develop close relationships with the field crews.
We have received positive feedback from our EMS Agencies regarding the schedule and operations. Providers have commented about the educational benefits of having the same fellow on their shift for the following reasons:
These are just the highlights as there are plenty of additional opportunities for the EMS Fellows to become involved with including wilderness and austere medicine, National Park Service EMS, search and rescue, tactical EMS opportunities, and more!
Didactics and ACGME Considerations
EMS Consortium meetings and program didactics are scheduled every Monday and appropriate modifications to the schedule are made to ensure fellow attendance. Didactic objectives highlight critical EMS Physician topics and prepare the fellow for the ABEM EMS Subspecialty Exam. ER shift requirements do not exceed monthly restrictions. There is always a faculty member on back-up both for supervision and to provide relief if the fellow gets called out to a scene or needs additional rest time.
Courses and Conferences
All UNM EMS Fellows are sponsored to travel to and attend the annual NAEMSP meeting in January and the National EMS Medical Director’s Course.
