Welcome
The UNM EMS Medical Direction Consortium or “The Consortium” as it is commonly known, brings together all the EMS resources within the University of New Mexico Department of Emergency Medicine EMS and Disaster Medicine Section. The consortium consists of our EMS Fellows and multiple EMS medical directors, each of whom also serves as a faculty member within the department. This partnership allows the EMS Medical Directors to collaborate, to share resources and share on-call responsibility. It also allows each participating agency to benefit from the collective expertise of all the EMS faculty members and fellows.
EMS services anywhere in New Mexico may contract with the UNM EMS Consortium. EMS services may elect to have the Consortium serve as their full-time medical director, or may choose to have the Consortium provide specific functions such as on-line medical direction, assistance with quality assurance, assistance with special skill development, or short-term medical direction coverage when the regular medical director is unavailable.
The Consortium, in collaboration with the UNM EMS Academy, also sponsors the UNM Department of Emergency Medicine’s EMS Fellowship. This program provides a focused year of accredited, specialty training to board-certified/board eligible Emergency Physicians planning to become board-certified, career EMS Physicians.
EMS physicians from the Consortium are on-call and available to our partners 24-hours a day to assist with complicated on-line medical direction issues. In addition, on-call EMS Consortium physicians are available for field response to assist affiliated EMS agencies with complicated clinical cases and mass casualty incidents, education and quality assurance.

Once off and running, the rest of the year is focused on learning how to be an EMS Physician. Fellows are assigned an EMS faculty mentor who will provide 1:1 mentorship alongside the Program Director in structured and unstructured activities throughout the year.
At the beginning of the fellowship year, each fellow will be assigned to a particular fire shift to facilitate learning and the transition to a new city. Rotating cycle schedules are commonplace in the fire service and provide a perfect structure upon which to build a curriculum to train EMS physicians. Each of the program’s three fellows are assigned to one of three shifts (A, B, or C) that mirror the local fire department schedule; 48 hours on, 96 hours off cycle. The fellows remain on the same shift for the duration of the year to develop close relationships with the field crews.
We have received positive feedback from our EMS Agencies regarding the schedule and operations. Providers have commented about the educational benefits of having the same fellow on their shift for the following reasons:
These are just the highlights as there are plenty of additional opportunities for the EMS Fellows to become involved with including wilderness and austere medicine, National Park Service EMS, search and rescue, tactical EMS opportunities, and more!
Didactics and ACGME Considerations
EMS Consortium meetings and program didactics are scheduled every Monday and appropriate modifications to the schedule are made to ensure fellow attendance. Didactic objectives highlight critical EMS Physician topics and prepare the fellow for the ABEM EMS Subspecialty Exam. ER shift requirements do not exceed monthly restrictions. There is always a faculty member on back-up both for supervision and to provide relief if the fellow gets called out to a scene or needs additional rest time.
Courses and Conferences
All UNM EMS Fellows are sponsored to travel to and attend the annual NAEMSP meeting in January and the National EMS Medical Director’s Course.
