Family Medicine speaks to my passions for longitudinal relationships, primary care, and patient advocacy. Having served as a patient advocate from informally translating Mandarin conversations for my mother, a first-generation immigrant, to educating the Hmong on and screening them for hepatitis B, I have a greater appreciation for how social factors (language, culture, education) affect patients’ health; I believe that effective care includes recognizing and working with these aspects of patients’ lives. At the University of New Mexico, I will build relationships with diverse patients (rural, urban, Native American, Spanish-speaking), many of whom are medically-underserved. Furthermore, with the support of excellent teaching faculty, I will manage complex patient cases in broad areas of medicine; this rigorous, well-rounded training will prepare me for any career within Family Medicine.
