While the Mobile Medical Teams are the most active part of the Center for Inclusive Health, the founders also conceptualized three other Domains to support the work of the Mobile Medical Teams
Center for Inclusive Health was founded to not only provide direct patient care through the Mobile Medical Team, but to also build and support educational opportunities for students, residents, and fellows. Over the last year with input from the Street Medicine Institute, University of Southern California Street Medicine Team and UNM Medical Students and Residents, we are building a curriculum to support our learners in this important work. This medical education opportunity will make UNM School of Medicine a draw for health profession students and medical residents.
In Fall of 2023, the Center for Inclusive Health partnered with ECHO and the Street Medicine Institute to launch the Street Medicine ECHO. This once-a-month ECHO provides didactic and case-based learning to providers and staff from all across the Globe. This opportunity has provided a platform for ongoing educational opportunities as well as help foment strong professional relationships and support among Street Medicine Team.

The Center for Inclusive Health also works towards building funds for provider professional development, including travel to conferences, seminar attendance, and other educational opportunities. In the Fall of 2024, Center for Inclusive Health was able to provide financial support to UNMHSC SMAHRT student group (Street Medicine, Addiction and Harm Reduction Team) leadership where they were presenting a paper on their research involving unsheltered New Mexicans.
In the Fall and Winter of 2023/2024, Center for Inclusive Health teamed up with Dr. Kim Page, lead epidemiologist with UNN Department of Internal Medicine whereby they assisted in interviewing over 500 unsheltered residents of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County. This was part of a larger study funded by the Department of Health and New Mexico Governor’s office that tasked Dr. Page’s team to investigate root causes of homelessness across New Mexico and identify sequelae of being unsheltered. The results of this landmark study are being used to support policy across the state regarding allocation of resources and appropriate responses to ending homelessness.
The Street Medicine Team is in constant need of over-the-counter medications, medical supplies for wound care, testing, and treatment, and PPE to protect our providers in the field. Please visit our Mobile Medical Team wish list to help us provide direct patient care.
Our goal is to build a fully staffed service line that meets people where they are and provides the care they need. We are currently working with Street Medicine International to develop the plan for this expansion. Additional funds are needed to sustainably implement the plan. Street Medicine at the UNM School of Medicine is more than treatment for our unhoused patients, it is also an educational opportunity for students, residents, and fellows. To do it correctly, we need to build a curriculum to support our learners in this important work. This medical education opportunity will make UNM School of Medicine a draw for health profession students and medical residents.
Street Medicine providers must be mobile to meet folks where they are. A pick-up truck that seats six equipped with appropriate storage, refrigeration, mobile device charging, a shade structure, and seating for patients and providers will allow the team to be where they need to be without using their personal vehicles.
