The University of New Mexico offers a unique, four-year combined Internal Medicine Residency and Geriatric Medicine Fellowship designed for medical school graduates who are passionate about caring for older adults. This innovative program integrates comprehensive internal medicine training with specialized education in geriatrics, equipping you with the skills to navigate the complex medical, social, and spiritual needs of aging patients.
Description:
During your first three years, you will complete all requirements for Internal Medicine board eligibility while building early and meaningful experience in Geriatric Medicine. From the start, you will care for older adults in continuity clinics under the mentorship of experienced geriatricians. This longitudinal exposure allows you to develop skills that align with your career goals and provides a solid foundation in managing the intricacies of aging-related care.
In your fourth year, you will complete a focused Geriatric Medicine Fellowship, deepening your expertise through tailored electives, interdisciplinary collaboration, and hands-on experiences across diverse care settings. By graduation, you will be fully trained in Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine—confident, compassionate, and ready to lead in a field of growing importance.

Application Process:
You will apply for this as if it is its own program. It will have its own NRMP number in the system. You can list and rank this opportunity as if it was a traditional IM residency.
