505-272-4051Urogynecology is a specialized field of medicine focused on the diagnosis and treatment of pelvic floor disorders in women, such as urinary and fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and bladder and bowel dysfunction.
Pursuing a urogynecology fellowship at the University of New Mexico (UNM) offers a unique opportunity to gain comprehensive training and hands-on experience in this specialized field of medicine. As a fellow at the University of New Mexico, you will work closely with experienced urogynecologists, participate in clinical and surgical cases, engage in research projects, and receive mentorship to develop your clinical and research skills.

Our three-year urogynecology fellowship at UNM is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
The University of New Mexico's urogynecology fellowship program presents a unique opportunity to gain broad surgical training in laparoscopic, robotic, open, and vaginal techniques, with additional hands-on experience at our onsite simulation center. Our patient population consists of a high volume of complex pelvic reconstructive cases from a referral area that covers all of New Mexico, as well as parts of Texas, Arizona, and Colorado.
Our diverse and exciting range of clinical experiences provides the ideal foundation to launch your career in urogynecology. As a fellow, your clinical experience will include one-month off-service rotations in gastroenterology, urology, and colorectal surgery, and also a two-week elective in a Rwanda fistula camp during your second year. Your patient care duties will include ambulatory clinic care and surgery, and you will take call from home on a rotating basis for the female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery service(with no call requirement for general Ob/Gyn).
Additionally, our program is dedicated to providing you with the skills and knowledge you will need to excel in your field. Because we recognize the importance of ultrasound in urogynecology. You will have the opportunity to work with our world-renowned ultrasonographer and become an expert with this powerful diagnostic tool. Whether you're interested in clinical practice or research, this experience gives you a unique advantage and prepares you to become a leader in urogynecology.
As a fellow in our urogynecology program at the University of New Mexico, you will be fully immersed in diverse and collaborative educational experiences. You will participate in weekly case presentations and discussions, as well as engage in didactic seminars. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to participate in a journal club with residents, morbidity and mortality meetings (quarterly), and Ob/Gyn grand rounds (weekly).
We believe that education and learning are lifelong pursuits, and we are dedicated to providing you with opportunities to expand your knowledge and expertise. As part of this commitment, we provide financial and clinical support for you to attend the annual American Urogynecologic Society and the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons conferences with opportunities for additional meetings available. Our goal is to foster your development into a well-rounded urogynecology specialist, prepared for any challenge in this dynamic field.
At the University of New Mexico’s urogynecology fellowship program, we recognize that research is a crucial component of advancing patient care. As a fellow, you will have access to our vast urogynecology research at UNM, laying the foundation for data-driven care. You will regularly participate in a range of research experiences, including dedicated research didactics, ongoing faculty research, and the opportunity to pursue the Clinical Translational Investigator Program. Additionally, you'll participate in weekly research meetings to discuss ongoing research projects and share ideas with fellow researchers. These opportunities will equip you to drive innovation in urogynecology and improve the lives of your patients.
As a fellow in our urogynecology program, we will also fully support you in the thesis project of your choice. You will have the opportunity to design, develop, and complete your own research project with the guidance of experienced faculty. You will also have access to free biostatistical support through UNM, which can help you analyze your data and draw meaningful conclusions. Additionally, we offer multiple research grant opportunities, providing the resources you need to pursue your interests and make a meaningful contribution to the field of urogynecology. We designed our program to prepare you for a successful career in academic medicine, where you can continue to pursue your passion for research and improve the lives of women everywhere.
