Apply to Residency

To apply for residency training at The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, you must meet one of the following qualifications:

• Graduate of a U.S. or Canadian Medical School: You are a graduate of a medical school in the United States or Canada that has been accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
• Graduate of an International Medical School: You are a graduate of an international medical school and meet one of the following qualifications:
  • A currently valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate
  • A full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. licensing jurisdiction
  • Completion of a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school

To apply, submit the following documents:

• Application
• Medical school transcript
• Personal statement
• Three to four letters of recommendation
• Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE, or Dean's letter)

For best consideration, applicants are strongly encouraged to complete either USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 for allopathic applicants or COMLEX Level 1 and Level 2 for osteopathic applicants, such that scores are available for review with their application. Residents accepted into the program MUST have completed both United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 and 2 (allopathic graduates) or COMLEX Level 1 and Level 2 (osteopathic graduates) before beginning their training.
